Joe Buck is a cowboy in New York city trying to make ends meet by selling his body uptown. When he teams up with ailing hustler/manager Ratso Rizzo they hope to strike it rich… but the streets of New York city aren’t kind or generous…

Based on a James Leo Herlihy novel, British director John Schlesinger’s first American film dramatized the small hopes, dashed dreams, and unlikely friendship of two late ’60s lost souls. Dreaming of an easy life as a fantasy cowboy stud, cheerful Texas rube Joe Buck (Jon Voight) heads to New York City to be a gigolo, but he quickly discovers that hustling isn’t what he thought it would be after he winds up paying his first trick (Sylvia Miles). He gets swindled by gimpy tubercular grifter Rico “Ratso” Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman) but, when Joe falls in the direst of straits, Ratso takes Joe into his condemned apartment so that they can help each other survive. Things start to look up when Joe finally lands his first legit female customer (Brenda Vaccaro) at a Warhol-esque party; Ratso’s health, however, fails. Joe turns a final trick to get the money for one selfless goal: taking Ratso out of New York to his dream life in Miami.

One of the first major studio films given the newly minted X rating for its then-frank portrayal of New York decadence, Midnight Cowboy was critically praised for Schlesinger’s insight into American lives, with the intercut mosaic of Joe’s memories and Ratso’s dreams lending their characters and actions greater psychological complexity. Midnight Cowboy became one of the major financial and artistic hits of 1969, winning Oscars for Best Picture (the first for an X-rated film), Best Director, and former blacklistee Waldo Salt’s screenplay.

LIVE MUSIC : 6-9PM

JOSH HARTY

A little bit country, a bit North Dakota, a little bit blues, and a bit Wisco.
Josh Harty is a messenger, a North Dakota songsmith whose lyrics fill the dark spots between the lines of our lives. “Nowhere” is his latest album and if the disc’s reception and his performance of the new material in the United Kingdom are signs, Harty is poised to go a long, long way.
It doesn’t get more Americana than Josh Harty. His father, both a preacher and the Police Chief of his boyhood small town, was also Harty’s music mentor. “I was either going to jail, or to hell,” Harty muses. That kind of humor, that hell-bound hope, is in the center of Harty’s music. Music captured on the new disc, polished in performance in America, and now ready for another UK tour in support of Nowhere.
The Atlanta Music Guide described Harty as having “fingers that seem to catch fire” …
“Josh Harty has a voice for troubled times and he works his way into the lives of his lost love characters with perfection. The emotions he brings let the songs play out in real time, the hurt and the bad days that follow are alive, the wounds raw.” theAlternateRoot.com

MELLOW PEACHES

Opening the night & less than a week before their album release, purveyors of rootsy stomps and gutsy grooves, the unassuming Peaches have long immersed themselves into traditional, organic and freshly sourced American blues and roots, mixing it up with their own gumbo of exotic flavours to create a wholesome dish that aids digestion….

“Reigning from Dudley, and singing with an accent located somewhere between the North of England and deep South of America, Mellow Peaches, featuring Amit Dattani and Richard Harris, combine fast-paced instrumentals with quirky lyrics to create a lively country blues and roots atmosphere. Song themes are vast and unpredictable. 1927 depicts the relationship between two feuding neighbours: a priest and a whiskey drinking layabout. “

Introducing the new re-usable eco-friendly KeepCup

We are proud to introduce the newest product to be sold at Six Eight, all the way from Australia : KeepCup. The First Barista Standard reusable cup.

To make things even better with the purchase of a KeepCup, the first drink is free and for each drink thereafter there is a massive 20p discount!

KeepCups are ‘barista standard’ because a trained barista can make awesome to go coffee in them.  They come in the four standard takeaway sizes and fit under the group handles of most espresso coffee machines. When your coffee is made in a KeepCup the crema on the shot is not broken and the portioning of milk to coffee will be correct.  KeepCups have thermal properties similar to paper so they are not a thermos. Replicating the functionailty of disposable cups KeepCups are splashproof, not a sealed container.

Many small acts make a phenomenal difference.

We chose plastic to manufacture the KeepCups.  They are made from single component materials, they are lightweight, easy to carry and have low embodied energy in manufacture.

KeepCups are BPA free and non-toxic.

To ensure they are user friendly they are also dishwasher and microwave safe and fit  into most bicycle and car cup holders.

Joe wins UK Barista Championship - Northern Ireland Heat

We are proud to announce that our newest barista Joe (new to us, but a long time coffee fan) headed over to Belfast last week and came first in the heat of UK Barista Championships.

With a solid performance for a first time entrant, and support in the preceding days from staff and customers alike, Joe used a delicious Has Bean Rawandan Kigoma Fully Washed Bourbon for his coffee, including a lemonade based signature drink to create a zesty mix of flavours.

We couldn’t be more thrilled to have Joe on our team and his hard work and practice has really paid off. Now  he focuses himself on the next step, as the semi-finals will be fast approaching on the 28th April in London.

Check out some of the photos below curtosy of Rob Smythe’s and Union Roasted’s Twitter Accounts.

Pointe Blank + FAKE Magazine = Live Art at 6/8 Kafe

Check out some shots of our live art event held Saturday 10/3/12. Run in association with Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Pointe Blank project (which is now exhibiting in our shop) and the launch of the 4th issue of our favourite independent publication, FAKE Magazine. Along with live illustration on large boards (in the street!); everyone had the chance to have a go by drawing on some beer (mug) mats with crayons and pens scattered around the shop; linking in to the superb illustration site Inkygoodness.

Check out some shots of the day below; then head hear and have a look here to have a look at the beermats people sketched and to find out more about the project.

Thanks to Rob, Claire, Michelle and the staff at 6/8 for a fun day all round!
