Help raise much-needed funds for the phabulous PHAB Camps, which enables children and young adults to go away on holiday! With 95% volunteer funding, they need all the help we can give, so come along and join this fun quiz night and stand the chance of winning some great prizes as well!

Birmingham PHAB Camps is a charity which hosts a series of activity holidays for both disabled and non-disabled children and young adults in a fun and friendly environment where new and challenging activities can be experienced together. The charity it totally self-funded, but costs around £95,000.00 per year to run, so fundraising is key.

If you could help in any way, you would be making a difference to someone’s life, allowing them to have fun safely that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to. They need money towards the holidays, plus donations of everyday items such as plastic bags and baby wipes, which are otherwise totally funded by the volunteers.

How can you help?

- Donate bags of unwanted/unused clothing which can then be swapped for cash through other local charities

- Donate baby wipes, plastic bags, and other useful everyday items

- Take part in the quiz night happening later this month (watch this space for date and time)

- Donate raffle prizes for the quiz night

- Donate spare change into the collection tin

“Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice provides vital care to patients and families living with terminal illnesses across Birmingham and Sandwell. The Hospice is there for the whole family when a person is told that their condition cannot be cured. The Hospice cares for people at home, which could be their own home, a relative’s or a care home. Care is also offered at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice Inpatient unit or Day Hospice in Selly Park. Patients are able to stay in the Inpatient Unit for a few weeks’ respite and symptom control. This also provides an often much-needed break for family and carers. The Day Hospice is a crucial lifeline for many of our patients. It offers clinical support, including a variety of therapies and physical care, and also a chance to meet others in a similar situation. Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice clinical care is about looking after physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of each patient.When a patient dies, the Hospice’s family support specialists will be there for the relatives to help them come to terms with their loss and get back to living full and independent lives again. The annual running cost of the Hospice is around £7.4 million each year - that’s £20,280 a day, £845 per hour, £14 every minute and the Six Eight Kafe Quiz will be able to support our continuing work.”

As part of BAF2013’s series of film screenings, we will be showing the award winning film, ‘You’ve Been Trumped’ here at 6/8 Kafe on Saturday 25th May at 7.45pm.

We are very excited to announce that the Director, Anthony Baxter, will be introducing his film and doing a Q&A session afterwards.

UK Coffee Week

UK Coffee Week is a celebration of all things coffee. Over seven days, coffee industry experts get together and showcase different aspects of specialty coffee. This is the third UK Coffee Week and the most ambitious yet.

Run by the Allegra Foundation, the fundraising event ‘provides a unique opportunity for branded coffee chains, independent coffee shops and industry suppliers to collaborate and celebrate the success of the industry, while raising money for Project Waterfall.’

PROJECT WATERFALL

UK Coffee Week raises valuable funds for Project Waterfall, providing sustainable clean water projects in deprived African communities. This year, its aim is to give some of the poorest and most marginalised communities in Tanzania (where only 54% of people have clean water) access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

Last year, over £100,000 was raised through UK Coffee Week and this year the project aims to raise even more. Access to clean, safe water and good sanitation is a basic human right and together we can make this a reality for those in need. There are many different ways to get involved and help out, and in store we will be asking you to help us raise money through donating 5p per coffee towards the foundation. We will also be selling raffle tickets all week, at the end of which one lucky winner will win FREE COFFEE FOR A YEAR!

1 @ 12pm Short and Swede

Inspired by the swedes in Michel Gondry’s Be Kind Rewind, these truncated versions of popular feature films are lo-fi, crass, and genuinely funny. Presented by Short and Swede; a regular Birmingham shorts night.

2 @ 3pm KINO 10: ROFLOL

Well, maybe not rolling on the floor, but there’s sure to be plenty of lolz in this selection of shorts curated by Birmingham short film aficionados, KINO 10. 12 Charities, 12 Months : ARRIVEALIVECREW.COM (Month 3)

So, as we are getting into the swing of this fundraising business, we are seeking out the most in need charities we can find within Birmingham and surrounding areas. We believe that these little well-known charities need help even more than the larger, more nationwide ones, and hope that through raising awareness, as well as much-needed funds, these important charities will continue to grow and help those in need as much as they can.

March’s charity is just a baby, only being formed very recently, and therefore is more in need of recognition that any of them! ArriveAliveCrew.com is a new way of fundraising and developing projects for the public good. In short, it aims to:

Recognise the cost of getting patients to hospital, to the best place for high quality medicine, treatment and care
Recognise that in order to be treated with the best chance of survival, patients need to get to hospital within 45 minutes. Helicopters can do this, but not all hospitals have helipads

To help us help this charity, there will be an information day on Tuesday March 19th from 11.30 - 2pm. Please come by and chat to the lovely volunteers, see how you could help, and sign up for the Rewards Club. There will also be an aluminium can drive at the cafe - bring all your cans! 700 crushed cans raises £5 towards building a helipad. There will ALSO be a continual donation possibility throughout the month at the till point - please give as generously as you already have done this year.

CHARITY UPDATE!

Thanks to your kind generosity, almost £300 was raised for Birmingham Children’s Hospital through the Charity Bake Off in January! No doubt this will help in lots of ways, and will go directly to Diabetes Home Care so that poorly children can continue to be treated at home in the care of their family. We wish them all get well wishes, and know that this couldn’t have been done without you.

Plans are a-foot to do a repeat next year, so we are challenging ourselves to double that amount. Get your baking hats on!
